Below are some of the top reasons to add one to your routine.

What You’ll Need

Before getting started, make sure you have all the right tools to get the job done.

You won’t need many tools, but there are a few essential items for installing your speed bag correctly.

  • Marker or pen
  • Drill
  • Mount
  • Screwdriver
  • Screws and bolts
  • Wrench
  • Level

Choosing The Right Mount

One of the most important parts of installing a speed bag in your garage is the mount. Your mount is what the speed bag will hang from.

There are two types of mounts you can use.

Below, you’ll find a description of each one and what makes it different.

Ceiling

As the name suggests, this is a mount that you attach to your ceiling.

If your ceiling is low enough, this is a good mount that will make sure your speed bag doesn’t hit anything.

Wall

A wall mount goes on the wall, of course, so how do you use a speed bag with it?

Part of it attaches to the wall, and a bar extends outward for your bag to hang.

Which One Is Better?

Both wall and ceiling mounts provide the stability you need for a speed bag, so the decision really comes down to your space and preference.

Many people use a wall mount because their ceiling is too high for a ceiling mount.

On top of that, garage ceilings may not have the right surface to mount something on. A wall mount gives you more flexibility in terms of height adjustment.

As long as you have the space for it, you can ensure that your speed bag hangs from the appropriate height.

But if your ceiling is low enough, a ceiling mount would be a great choice because you will likely not need to adjust too much once it’s installed.

However, installation of a ceiling mount can also be slightly trickier because of the angle.

How to Hang a Speed Bag

Once you have everything you need, it’s time to hang your speed bag! Overall, it’s a straightforward process that nearly anyone can do.

Just follow these five simple steps:

Step 1: Find a Good Spot

One of the best places to hang your speed bag is in your garage. It’s a space that you can leave open for intense workouts.

Decide whether you want it hanging from the ceiling or if you can mount it on the wall.

Whatever you choose, make sure you pick an area where your speed bag can hang at eye level.

Step 2: Drill Holes

Now that you have the right spot chosen, it’s time to mark off the area where you will be mounting.

Do this by holding the mount against the surface you’re attaching it to, and designate the spots you’ll be drilling. As you do this, check to see that your lines are level.

Once you have your holes marked and level, you can drill the spots for your screws.

Step 3: Secure Your Mount

Marking and drilling the holes will allow you to secure your mount, which is the piece that adheres to a wall or ceiling and attaches to your hanging speed bag.

For the most part, these are sold separately from the actual speed bag.

Get a mount that is sturdy and efficient in size. This will guarantee your speed bag is always locked in the right place.

Step 4: Hang the Bag

Once your mount is secured, you’re ready to hang the speed bag. This step is easy since there’s a hook in the mount’s center to hang the bag from.

Your punching bag also has a hook that latches onto the mount’s connector.

After you’ve attached it, make sure that it’s hanging straight down and that it falls between nose or eye level.

Step 5: Test It Out

Your speed bag may be hanging, but there’s still one more step you need to take. It’s time to test it out and make sure it is secure enough and in the right spot.

Just throw some test punches and look at how it moves.

A properly installed speed bag should fly towards the back and swing back to the front. The movement should be smooth.

If it’s wobbly, you should retrace the previous steps to find out what the cause is.
